 · ClickWheel Mods

Of course there are things like iPoDonut, and the new iSkins come with a ClickWheel protector. But what if, say, you have an iSkin without the ClickWheel cover, or some other skin that leaves it completely exposed, and don't want to spend more than you already have? Today I will show you how to protect that 'wheel with style.

The first inspiration came while looking at the cover of "Conspiracy Of One" by The Offspring. Since my iSkin is blue, and I like their music, why not convert that logo into a cool-looking ClickWheel cover?
This thing costs next to $0 and offers plenty of protection. The ClickWheel will work just as normal, but will look way better!

What you will need to make yours:

  • A sheet of paper
  • Transparent adhesive film
  • An iPod, iSkin and a printer
Image displayed with the consent of The Offspring. Thank you guys!

Just print the desired image. The ClickWheel is about 4 cm wide, the hole of the iSkin is a little more.
Make test prints of different sizes to see how closely your printer matches the screen. (On my HP Deskjet 930C I got perfect results with 4.2 cm)
Next, cut out your logo leaving about 0.5 cm above, 1.5 cm on each side and 1 cm below the image. This way the protection will be held in place by the iSkin and won't slip.
Cut out two 1x1 cm squares off the lower corners of the paper so it fits neatly around the curved body of the iPod.
Place a little adhesive film on top so you don't get your image dirty and so you can clean it better if it does get.
Carefully slide it under the iSkin (I haven't figured ot a perfect way to do this. See below), adjust its position and... voilà! Your custom made ClickWheel cover.

I figured out the best way to insert the ClickWheel Cover was to slip the iPod out of its skin, then placing the ClickWheel cover in place on the iPod. Just slide the iPod and the ClickWheel cover back in (through the display cut-out) making sure the cover stays more or less in place. Once it's inside, slide it around under the skin until it is perfectly centered.

I later created a second protector with the Element logo.

If you create your own, let me know and I might post pictures of your mod here!

Note: Don't stretch your iSkin for too long or change the protector too often. I noticed my iSkin was starting to widen a little bit after inserting the Element logo.
